We offer a variety of workshops categorized by three stages of a students' career journey. Please read the learning outcomes associated with each workshop topic below. Then you can submit a request form to inquire about your preferred workshop.
Getting Started
Intro to U Career Success
(15 minutes)
By the end of this workshop, students will be able to:
- Reframe at least one common myth about career development
- List at least 3 services our office provides (career coaching, fairs and workshops, video studio, career closet, professional headshots, etc.)
- Explain where our office is located and our hours of operation
- List at least one upcoming program or event
Career Exploration
(60 minutes)
By the end of this workshop, students will be able to:
- List basic information about U Career Success: who we are, what we do, & how to connect with us
- Reframe at least 2 common myths about career development
- Articulate the stages of the career development process: know yourself, research your options, prototype, reflect & evaluate
- Identify ways to get to know themselves better
- Research career options
- Identify ways to gain hands-on experience to prototype
- Explain why it’s important to take time to reflect and evaluate
- Start their career development process by exploring their knowledge, skills, values, and/or personality traits

Personal Image
(60 minutes)
By the end of this workshop, students will be able to:
- List basic information about U Career Success: who we are, what we do, & how to connect with us
- Articulate what personal image is and why it's important
- Determine how they want to represent themselves
- List at least 2 pieces of their personal image
- Identify at least one platform for building a professional image and networking (LinkedIn & AlumniFire)
- Name at least 1 method for maintaining a professional image
Job & Internship Search
(60 minutes)
By the end of this workshop, students will be able to:
- List basic information about U Career Success: who we are, what we do, & how to connect with us
- List at least 2 criteria which define an internship
- Articulate the value of an internship
- List at least one resource where they can search for jobs & internships
- Articulate their career/internship values to prioritize opportunities which are a good fit for them
- List the materials needed to apply for a job or internship
Making Progress
Networking & Curiosity Conversations
(60 minutes)
By the end of this workshop, students will be able to:
- List basic information about U Career Success: who we are, what we do, & how to connect with us
- Define networking
- Articulate why networking is important
- List at least 2 resources for informational interviews & networking
- Create an effective elevator pitch
- Prepare for an informational interview
Resumes
(60 minutes)
By the end of this workshop, students will be able to:
- List basic information about U Career Success: who we are, what we do, & how to connect with us
- Explain what a resume is and its purpose
- Explain basic formatting guidelines for resume writing
- Tailor a resume to the opportunity and audience
- Write strong accomplishment statements for transferable skills
Cover Letters
(60 minutes)
By the end of this workshop, students will be able to:
- List basic information about U Career Success: who we are, what we do, & how to connect with us
- Explain what a cover letter is and its purpose
- Identify top strengths (skills/experience/expertise) that fit the requirements for a particular position
- Articulate a specific reason for their interest in that organization and position/opportunity
- Indicate the basic structure for formatting a cover letter
Resumes & Cover Letters (Combined)
(90 minutes)
By the end of this workshop, students will be able to:
- List basic information about U Career Success: who we are, what we do, & how to connect with us
- Explain basic formatting guidelines for resume writing
- Tailor a resume to the opportunity and audience
- Write accomplishment statements for transferable skills
- Indicate the basic structure for formatting a cover letter
- Articulate a specific reason for their interest in the position
- Identify top strengths (skills, knowledge, experience) which demonstrate fit for the particular position
Career Fair Prep
(60 minutes)
By the end of this workshop, students will be able to:
- List basic information about U Career Success: who we are, what we do, & how to connect with us
- Articulate the importance of attending the fairs
- List the event details for the fairs (*including how to access virtual fairs)
- Find & research attending employers
- Identify appropriate business attire for the Fairs
- Articulate their strengths
- Engage in conversation with employers (elevator pitch)
- Understand expectations of employers at the fairs
*Additional Learning Outcomes for virtual fairs:
- Attend a virtual fair
- Set up an appropriate space for virtual fairs
Finishing Up
Interviewing
(60 minutes)
By the end of this workshop, students will be able to:
- List basic information about U Career Success: who we are, what we do, & how to connect with us
- List at least 2 pre-interview preparation steps
- Implement the past, present, future method for answering “tell me about yourself” questions
- Implement the PART method for answering behavior-based questions
- Identify examples of strengths and weaknesses to answer potential interview questions
- Develop relevant questions to ask an interviewer at the end of the interview
- Write a follow-up message to thank interviewers after an interview
Negotiation
(2 hours 30 minutes)
By the end of this workshop, students will be able to:
- List basic information about U Career Success: who we are, what we do, & how to connect with us
- Explain that the majority of people who negotiate are at least partially successful
- Articulate the difference between a salary range, target salary, and walk-away-point
- List at least one resource for conducting salary negotiation research
- Identify their value to an employer & match their strengths and experience to a position
- Articulate strategies for communicating with employers about salary
Applying to Graduate School
(60 minutes)
By the end of this workshop, students will be able to:
- List basic information about U Career Success: who we are, what we do, & how to connect with us
- Evaluate the value of attending graduate school for themselves
- Articulate what time of year they should be applying for grad school by
- Develop criteria for evaluating various graduate programs
- List at least 2 key items within a graduate school application package
- List at least 1 tip for choosing people to write recommendation letters
