FUUSI
Get Funding for Your Internship
FUUSI (Funding for Unpaid and Underpaid Student Internships) supports University of Utah students who take unpaid, or significantly under-paid, internships in the nonprofit and government sectors.
How does FUUSI work?
Students accepted to the FUUSI program are paid directly for their internship through employment with the Career Center. Paychecks are sent bi-weekly and reflect the part-time or full-time nature of the student's internship. Students are required to complete a series of assignments in order to stay in the program.
What are the application requirements?
You are required to find an internship on your own before applying to the program. The internship must be in nonprofit or government. Once you receive an internship offer, you can begin the FUUSI application process. The application requires:
- A resume
- Details about the internship, like: role, supervisor, location, etc.
- Three short-answer responses to the following questions:
- How does the internship align with your future goals?
- How will the money help you to succeed?
- What else would you like the selection committee to consider?
What should I expect if I am accepted?
In order to keep your status as a FUUSI student, you are required to complete certain tasks and assignments. Those include:
- Orientation: You will be required to attend an orientation session at the beginning of your experience, where you will meet other FUUSI interns, better understand the requirements and expectations around FUUSI, and meet with UHR to get paperwork taken care of.
- Reflections: Over the course of the program, you will be required to submit 2 video reflections on your internship.
- Internship Advocacy Projects: You will be required to complete 2 projects that share your story and encourage other students to pursue internships while at the U. Options include:
- CPDC social media takeover
- CPDC blog post/feature
- A marketing/program idea of their own.
- Tabling/Panel Participation: You will be expected to participate in at least 1 future tabling or panel discussion promoting FUUSI and/or internship topics to students.
- Exit Survey: At the end of the program, you will take an exit survey that asks what you used the money for, what went well in the program and what could be improved in the program.
Can I apply more than once?
You can apply for FUUSI up to three times, as long as each time you apply it is for a new internship experience.
What if I'm an international student?
International students must first meet with their advisor in International Student & Scholar Services to get approval for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) in order to pursue an internship. After you have approval for your CPT and have secured an internship, you can apply for FUUSI.
