Get Funding for Your Internship
FUUSI (Funding for Unpaid and Underpaid Student Internships) supports you in getting funding for unpaid, or significantly under-paid, internships in the nonprofit and government sectors.
How does FUUSI work?
First, you must apply to the program to ensure your internship is an eligible opportunity. Once accepted, you will be paid $13 an hour directly through employment at the Career Center. Students will be required to work around 19 hours a week for the duration of their internship. A series of projects must be completed in order to stay in the program.
Where can I find an internship?
An internship in either nonprofit or government space is required to apply to FUUSI. If you’ve never searched for a job or internship before, feel free to schedule an appointment with a career coach to help prepare you for this experience.
For nonprofits, you can check out this directory of nonprofits in Utah, the Bennion Center, or even the Hinckley Institute for opportunities. You are also encouraged to explore on your own to find an organization that is meaningful to you and your career goals.
For government work, federal, state, and local opportunities all qualify. State of Utah positions can be found at this link, and federal positions can be found at this link. Check with your local/city government for a list of their current positions.
What are the application requirements?
You are required to find an internship on your own before applying to the program. The internship must be in either the nonprofit or government sectors. Once you receive an internship offer, you can begin the FUUSI application process. The application requires:
- A resume
- Details about the internship, like: role, supervisor, location, etc.
- Three short-answer responses to the following questions:
- How does the internship align with your future goals?
- How will the money help you to succeed?
- What else would you like the selection committee to consider?
The selection committee will be looking for a demonstrated financial need and how well the applicant articulates how the internship aligns with their career goals when reviewing applications. There are a limited number of positions in the program available, so please be thorough in your answers. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, based on availability of funding and positions in the program.
What should I expect if I am accepted?
In order to keep your status as a FUUSI student, you are required to complete certain tasks and projects. Those include:
- Reflections: Over the course of the program, you will be required to submit 2 video reflections on your internship.
- Internship Advocacy Projects: You will be required to complete 2 projects that share your story and encourage other students to pursue internships while at the U. Options include:
- CPDC social media takeover
- CPDC blog post/feature
- A marketing/program idea of your own.
- Tabling/Panel Participation: You will be expected to participate in at least 1 future tabling or panel discussion promoting FUUSI and/or internship topics to students.
- Exit Survey: At the end of the program, you will take an exit survey that asks what you used the money for, what went well in the program and what could be improved in the program.
Can I apply more than once?
You can apply for FUUSI up to three times, as long as each time you apply it is for a new internship experience.
What if I'm an international student?
International students must first meet with their advisor in International Student & Scholar Services to get approval for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) in order to pursue an internship. After you have approval for your CPT and have secured an internship, you can apply for FUUSI.
