CAREER FAIR TIPS FOR EMPLOYERS

Before the Fair

  • You want to ensure your display demonstrates to observers what you do, and what you are looking for.
  • Have brochures on hand, but since we are ensuring a “Green” event, we ask you to please keep paper to a minimum. Certainly use handouts to initiate conversations with students, but do not allow that to be your only presentation.
  • Request interview rooms and information sessions at least two weeks in advance.

Interacting with students

  • Students prefer to hear an overall view of what you have to offer.
  • Stand at your exhibit if you are able.
  • Don’t wait for students to approach you, be assertive, while friendly and sincere.
  • Make your booth as interactive and informational as possible. Students do not want to hear, "Go to our website."

After the Fair

  • Respond to all inquiries personally as soon as you can
  • Consider connecting with students by participating in other Career & Professional Development Center programs and events throughout the year.

ADDITIONAL ON-CAMPUS RECRUITING

Each semester, we hold 8 – 10 Meet & Eats, which are a weekly form of the typical employer information session.  For the right employer, these sessions are the perfect place to build your brand on campus and share information about your organization's culture, benefits, career paths, and employment opportunities.  Meet & Eats slots are by invite only, but if you are interested in being considered for future slot, please contact your Employer Engagement Specialist.

Requests for information sessions that are not Meet & Eats are considered on a case by case basis.

The Career & Professional Development Center offers an array of services to help employers achieve their recruitment goals at the University of Utah.  Recruitment opportunities are designed to help our current students and recent alumni find full-time and internship positions within organizations.  You may request these interviews through your Handshake account.  Also, please review our office’s Recruitment Policies to make sure we have a shared understanding of priorities and expectations.

A successful on-campus recruiting process takes four to six weeks from start to finish and includes the following:

  • Submit a request in Handshake to schedule on-campus recruitment interview date
  • Post position(s) and set selection criteria (major, degree level, graduation dates, work authorization, etc.)
  • Collect resumes/applications through Handshake
  • Invite and schedule student candidates to interview

Interview Room Policy:

Interview requests must be submitted via Handshake at least 4 weeks prior to the interview date.  During the week of a career fair, interview rooms are reserved only for employers who are registered for the fair.  Requests submitted for interview days during the week of a career fair by employers who are NOT registered for that fair will be declined, so be sure to register for the fair first and then submit your request for an interview room.

Fall 2019 Interview Room Dates to Know:

  • August 23, 2019: Deadline to submit an interview room request for the Career & Internship Fair and the STEM Career & Internship Fair.
  • September 23 - 27, 2019: Only employers who are registered for the STEM Career Fair may reserve our interview rooms during this time.
  • September 30 - October 4, 2019: Only employers who are registered for the Career & Internship Fair may reserve our interview rooms during this time.

Types of On-Campus Interviewing

  •  Room Reservation Only
    • This interview option is highly recommended as it allows the most flexibility for you.
    • An interview room is reserved for your use all day. You build and manage the interview schedule.
  • Pre-Select Schedule
    • This type of schedule works best for positions that require specific majors, such as accounting and engineering. Interview schedules are posted online and typically take five weeks from posting to interviewing.
      • Weeks 1-3: We promote your visit to students who meet the requirements in the job descriptions you provided and encourage them to submit their resume for your consideration.
      • Week 4: You review the resumes and determine which students best meet your requirements.
      • Week 5: Students receive notification that they have been accepted and they will go online to schedule an interview
  • Open Schedule
    • This type of schedule works best for positions with a broader spectrum of majors such as management, customer services, and sales. Interview schedules are posted online and typically take four weeks from posting to interviewing.
      • Weeks 1-4: We promote your visit to students who meet the requirements in the job descriptions you provided and encourage them to submit a resume and sign up for an interview
