INTERNSHIPS & CREDIT

What is an Internship?

An Internship is typically an experience that:

  1. relates to your major and/or planned career goal,
  2. is a responsible position with professional supervision, and
  3. provides university-level learning experience.

Finding an Internship

Many jobs may qualify as an Internship even if the word "intern" is not in the title. Some job titles make it clear that the opportunity is an Internship, but you may be able to make another job serve as an "Internship" as well. Be sure to investigate full and part-time jobs. For specialized assistance, consult your Career Services counselor.

Earning academic credit for an Internship

There are two main ways to earn academic credit:

  1. Through Your Academic Department: In some cases, it may be advantageous or required for you to gain credit from your academic department for a department-approved Internship. Be sure to carefully discuss that option with your departmental academic advisor.

  2. Through the Career Services Internship Program: Career Services coordinates the Career Services Internship Program to provide an opportunity for student to earn upper-division academic credit while learning about a career and gaining real-world experience in the workplace. This Internship program provides credit for learning, not credit simply for working.
