Benefits of Attending a Career Fair

  • Face-to-face interviews: the most effective and efficient recruiting method.
  • Compression of the hiring process: meet many candidates in a short period of time.
  • Well-qualified and diverse professionals: our advertising campaigns bring a large number of job seekers at all levels.
  • Savings of time and money: an increased hire ratio. (You can barely place a newspaper ad for $200.)
  • Continued exposure after the fair: a free Career Fair Program Book lists all participating companies with contact names and numbers and the types of jobs available.
  • Web listing: As soon as you register, your company name and is published to our website.
  • E-mail contact with students: Students are sent notices through our database as well as individual counselors about the specifics of each fair.
  • FYI Newsletter: This electronic newsletter is emailed to 25,000 campus staff and faculty.
  • Listed on the calendar for University events
  • Radio: Prior to the Career Fair the University of Utah radio station, KUER, broadcasts information.
  • Flyers and posters: Large format flyers with catchy slogans and artwork are utilized to inform students of the career fairs. These are distributed over the entire campus.
  • Banners: Strategically placed banners are hung one month prior to the Career fair notifying students of the events.

Recruiting Tips for Participating Employers

We provide tips to our students to make the fair as successful for them as possible. We encourage them to dress appropriately, to come with polished resumes, and to talk with the companies of interest. Similarly, below are a few tips we feel would make the Career Fair more successful for you.

  • Set your Goals Before the Fair - Before showing up at a particular fair, it is important for you to know why your company has chosen to participate in this event. Some companies participate in career fairs as part of an image advertising campaign. There may not be active job openings, but the company may want to collect resumes for future openings and maintain good public relations.
  • Establish your Goals - What types of candidates do you want to meet? What would make the cost of the career fair a success for you in terms of manpower and time involved? These are the types of questions you should ask yourself and others on the team as you begin your planning for the event.
  • Have a Recruiting Plan - Have more than one person there.  You can't meet everyone by yourself. Think about bringing an alum from the University of Utah as part of your recruiting team. Develop a strategy for handling the students and resumes you might receive at the event. For critical-hire position, bring hiring managers to attend the event with you. Have your calendar or an electronic organizer by your side so that you can schedule meetings with candidates. Be ready to jot down some notes on resumes as you meet candidates and have your own coding system. Track applicants. Debrief after the event making certain that someone will follow-up on the good candidates.
  • Meet Everyone - That extra person may be "The One."
  • Recruit in Front of Your Table, Shake Hands, Smile! - Be one of the companies that takes the opportunity to meet 100% of the candidates.
  • Sell Your Organization to the Candidate - You are competing with other recruiters for the same candidates; our students want to know about you and job opportunities within your organization.
  • Stay Until the Very End - Our promotions are designed to drive candidates to our events during class breaks or before or after work. The last person may be the "Million Dollar" candidate.
